NATIONAL JOURNAL OF HOMOEOPATHY 1994 Mar / Apr Vol III No 2.
Q1: Where should one find these symptoms -
- Lachrymation during passage of stools.
- What is the rubric for the following symptoms and where is it found?
- No desire for worship since the days she started homoeopathic treatment.
- Child refuses to hold the nipple of the breast or bottle while awake but sucks well during sleep.
Dr. S.C. MISHRA (JABALPUR)
Ans: When we are not able to exactly rubricate a symptom, then I follow the advice of Dr. Margaret Tyler break the symptom into two or three parts, then locate them separately and then club them together. In Lachrymation during passage of stool take Lachrymation KR 254 and Complaints during stool SR II. Club them and select the common drugs.
The symptom No desire for worship since the day she started homoeopathic treatment is hypothetical, unless of course the patient is a priest or a saint and has lost interest in previous religious activities, then we interpret it as indifference to business / occupation. If this symptom was not present in the past nor is there any probable environmental factor it can be a medicinal effect. Either stop the drug being administered or give suitable antidote or reinterrogate the case as a fresh one and select a new drug with the symptom of Godless / want of religious feeling KR Pg 50.
The symptom Child refuses to hold the nipple of the breast or bottle while awake but sucks well during sleep could not be traced in the commonly used repertories. Logically, desires and aversions are mental symptoms and expressed only when awake. For example a Natrum-mur patient prefers loneliness and hence avoids company only when he is conscious. He does not get up from deep sleep when someone else sleeps or sits next to him. Similarly for this symptom you must take Refuses / aversion to milk (KR pg 481) and leave aside the fact that he takes milk while he sleeps which is often observed even in normal children.
Q2: Which is the most up to date Materia Medica available in the country?
KULDEEP R TATER (MADRAS)
Ans: The Homoeopathic Materia Medica is a record of constitutional expressions (symptoms) obtained from different sources like human proving, ancient literature, clinical applications, accidental poisonings, physiochemical properties, prognosticative skills and so on. There are thousands of remedies reported till date and several Materia Medicas written in different forms and from different angles depending on the perceptions and experience of the author. No Materia Medica is complete containing all the medicines with all the symptoms.
A few source books can be considered as original and authentic. They are Hahnemanns Materia Medica Pura (2 Vols), Clarkes Dictionary (3 Vols), Herings Guiding Symptoms (12 Vols) and Allens Encyclopedia (12 Vols).
Q3: Allens Keynotes under the chapter of Arsenic-alb says "Great prostration, with
rapid sinking of the vital forces; Sir as per your teachings there is only one Vital
force, then why does Allen say forces?
DR. PRAMOD BANSOD (INDORE)
Ans: It is unfortunate that there exists hardly any authentic forum in our country which has undertaken the task of seriously editing and upgrading the writings of the masters of yesteryears. This is probably because we are basically philosophers and think that no one is competent enough to undertake such changes. There are some fanatics who believe in every word written by master prescribers. Such irrational minds discourage all scientific attempts to undertake these tasks.
In my opinion Dr. Allen has used the word Vital to stress the importance of biological forces (energies) that every cell (nucleus) has. These energies are obtained from food, air, water, sunlight etc. The health (growth and development) of every organ depends on these reserve energies. Whereas the Vital Force as we homoeopaths understand is the dynamic force which is responsible for governing the function of individual organs (in an integrated manner) so as to achieve a harmonious state of Homoeostasis. It is in this state that the constitution is resistant to all environmental influences (of course within permissible limits).
