Shattered Dreams
NATIONAL JOURNAL OF HOMOEOPATHY 1993 Jan / Feb Vol II No 1.

INTRODUCTION:

It pained me to see no literature and very few records of cases with positive results in polio. As rightly put : polio had not only handicapped children but the entire medical profession. Every body considers it INCURABLE. The helplessness of these children and the plight of the parents regarding their childs future is indeed a very moving sight. It took six years of hard work, patience and perseverance for us to us to reach the success in the treatment.

Poliomyelitis is well known to everybody and as you are related to the medical profession I do not see any necessity to explain to you the basic pathology, clinical features or prognosis of this disease. We all know that polio makes the child handicapped and an object of pity for the rest of his life.

"HOMOEOPATHY CAN CURE POLIO"

To make this statement we did research for six years on near about 3000 Polio cases and we did gain success. The chart on page 36 shows success rate according to age groups and severity of disease :

The Important Points for Cure are :

  1. Below one year all types of Polio cases are curable. The success rate is 94 percent.
  2. Before the age of 10 years maximum chances of recovery is possible especially if only one lower limb is affected.
  3. As time passes the chances of maximum recovery decrease.
  4. Cases of females can be improved to the maximum extent even at a later age because they have a natural tendency to growth of muscles which is faster than in males.
  5. In cases of upper limbs if patients comes earlier their chances of recovery are good else if delayed, they become difficult to cure.
  6. When both the limbs are affected and if patients age is more than 5 years there is less chance of recovery.

The Exciting Causes of Polio are :

  1. Polio Vaccine.
Those children who are weak and have suffered from polio soon after 1st, 2nd, 3rd doses of vaccine.
  2. Not giving Polio Vaccine -
This can hardly be one of the reasons since Homoeopathy does not recognise the virus as the root cause of the disease. If your patient is strictly under homoeopathic treatment, there are less chances of contracting Polio even though he may not be immunised by Polio Vaccine.
  3. Patient already has a subclinical attack of polio and injection precipitates it -The major cause of polio is the giving of an injection during a fever 90 percent of the cases have this history. No matter if you are immunised or not, an infections fever especially if associated with diarrhoea or vomiting may cause polio. The limb which has been pricked gets affected. During fever limbs are prone to paralysis especially in children. There is no way to know if that fever is that of Polio or not. So better to avoid an injection.
  4. History of fall or injury may result in Polio.
  5. Polio Virus - Western Medicine consider it as the cause.

Treatment

Refer to Chart

After one year repeat the same procedure from the first month. During the above treatment one can give any other Homoeopathic drug for any illness. It does not affect the treatment of Polio in any way.

Reasons :

Hypericum, Gelsemium,, Lathyrus are more commonly suited than any other medicine in bringing nerve strength in the Polio affected part.

Calc-phos, Nat-mur, Silica remove the emaciation of affected part and help muscles gain strength. As polio is a neurological disorder repetition of medicine is essential.

Bacillinum increase the total immunity and thus helps the patient to recover fast.

Restrictions :

Tea, coffee, allopathic drugs except Gardinal or Sodium Valproate (for epileptic convulsions) should be restricted. Injections or any other kind of vaccination are to be strictly avoided.

Massage and Physiotherapy :

Light massage and physiotherapy are extremely essential in acute and chronic cases of polio. It is better to use pure coconut oil for massage. Extension and flexion of the affected part is very essential and effective.

External or Surgical aid :

In cases of deformed and shortened limb due to contraction of tendons medicines are of little help. Here the need of surgical correction and support of caliper splint or crutches accordingly becomes necessary.

About Polio Nirmulan Kendra :

The staff is well trained in massage therapy and physiotherapy. They have achieved great success in recovering the strength to polio cases. Original normalcy cannot be brought back of the affected limbs.

Sequence of improvement :

  1. The movements of both the limbs increase.
  2. Will try to get up from bed.
  3. Will try to sit by keeping hands on support and bending forwards.
  4. Will sit without support.
  5. Will try to crawl.
  6. Crawling fast.
  7. Will try to stand with support.
  8. Will stand with support.
  9. Will try to walk a few steps with support.
  10. Will walk neatly with support.
  11. Will start walking without support but falls on walking a little.
  12. Will not fall when running.
  13. Will try to run but fails.
  14. Will not fall.
  15. In any acute or chronic case improvement occurs in the first six months. Some may show improvement in just 15 days.

An illustrative case

A five year old Polio, cured in one year :

Miss Gourma, 6 years of age came to me with the following symptoms Polio of both the legs since the age of 9 months which occurred soon after an injection in fever. She had received all the vaccines at the proper age including the Polio vaccine. Right leg regained some strength within 6 months due to allopathic drugs. Left leg did not improve and is now emaciated to 4 plus, deformed and contracted short by one inch. She is able to walk with support of crutches under the arm for a short distance.

Three months after treatment, the emaciation reduced to 2 plus, could walk a long distance with the help of a single stick. Contraction also started decreasing.

In another three months the patient has started walking a small distance without support. Emaciation reduced to one plus. Contraction reduced to a great extent, yet not able to keep legs completely on the ground.

Patient continued treatment for six months without coming for any examination. After six months the patient came without any support and could walk long distances, emaciation had completely gone and she could keep leg on the ground. No loss of balance despite walking fast.

This case had responded very quickly and with maximum results.

CASE NO P-2045

Generally in six months 70-75 percent patients recover to near about 85-90 percent of efficacy.

EDITORS COMMENTS:

This impressive and lengthy paper was sent to us by Dr. Vijaydeep waghannas Polio Nirmulan Kendra, Solapur. Dr Anuradha Chalke Rao has abridged this paper for the NJH.

The center has in the last six years treated 3000 cases of poliomyelitis. But these results will be accepted by the medical world only if accompanied by documented investigations especially EMG reports.

The author states that the schedule of treatment could be criticized as being polypharmacy. But he says that their experiments with all the other methods did not yield results. In a disorder where results world wide are very poor, then an approach which can give such favourable results is acceptable.

Also, this is not polypharmacy in the true sense, rather it is a sequential mode of treatment together with biochemic combinations and Hypericum as a specific injury medicine. Thuja is interposed as an Antimiasmatic. Also in cases where there is an advanced pathology, a frequent repetition of medicine seems warranted.

At my end I have decided to approach the Bombay Polio center to conduct a six month experiment on these lines.
