` Calc.

A 9 year old girl, came on 2nd January 1996 with complaints of recurring colds and cough especially after taking outside water or cold things. Starts with sneezing and coryza of a short duration followed by cough which lasts for days together. The cough was worse in the daytime with severe pain in the throat and is always accompanied with pain in the ears and vomiting. Vomiting also occurs after overeating as also with fever. The nasal discharge is yellow.

There is a history of hair fall after an episode of food poisoning.

Also has a history of loud embarrassing flatus with regular formed stools. Every attack of fever is accompanied by headache and leg pain.

Past History: Jaundice twice, Worms (pin worms and tapeworms). Measles, UTI.

Birth History: Born a premature baby and with episodes of colicky pains as an infant.

Milestones were normal except that she had delayed dentition.

Family History: No major ailment in the family.

Personal History: Appetite -good.

Craving-Sweets (3+), chicken. home made food.

Aversion-Boiled eggs, sour,. onions, tomato, milk, cauliflowers, biscuits, fruit juices.

Sweet - profuse. More on the occiput.

Sleep- not very sound. Constantly tosses and turns and kicks in bed.

Dreams - playing with dolls.

Thermal - Likes rain, cold weather, fan.

No aggravation from heat.

Mentals: An only child who came to Bombay from Nasik a year ago. Whenever she comes to the clinic she hides behind her mother or covers her face. Has a habit of whispering into her mothers ear when asked about something. Always at the receiving end of the mothers wrath (frustrated) and therefore has becoming rebellious. Refuses to do things imposed by her mother and behaves insolently and rudely. If she does a thing out of compulsion she is quite diffident about it. Obstinate. Reserved-talks only with selected people. She is talkative at home and also likes to listen to others conversing. Talks about the world, and the social happenings.

Play with dolls mainly and drawing is her favorite pastime. Likes staying indoors. Likes her friends to come over but does not like to go out of her own house. Dislike travelling. Brilliant in studies. Competitive, A sensitive and compassionate child, but disorderly and lazy.

Physical Examination:

A fat, fair, flabby constitution with hot palms. Tenderness of tonsils more on the left side. Bilateral nasal polyps present. Frontal hair loss. Hair wavy, brittle. Dribbling sweat from the scalp.

Treatment

22nd January 1996: Calcarea-carb 200, 1 dose, SL for 7 days.
29th January 1996
Cold better. Slight cough. Creamish discharge. Has started going to her friends house.
Treatment-SL for 7 days.
4th February 1996-Came in smiling. Has scored 94 percent marks Complains of lachrymation due to viewing too much television.
Constipation due to bread and potatoes and flatulence. Sweating >
Treatment-SL for 7 days.
14th February 1996.

Sneezing since yesterday with pain in the right eye and nasal bone. Ailments from colds. Nausea after over eating. Flatulence better. Constipation better.

Treatment-SL for 7 days.
18th February 1996

Came back within 4 days with complaints of a sudden attack of coryza probably due to eggs. Sore throat, dry cough worse on lying down and sleeplessness also present. Increased thirst for water. Enlarged left tonsil. Weakness marked. Nasal discharge yellow.

Treatment-Calc-carb 200, one dose.

20th February 1996-Cough increased, during day and night. Sore throat improved. Weakness increased with increased irritability. Wheezing, rattling in the chest. Pain in the throat worse on swallowing radiating from left to right. Coughing on running and associated with vomiting feels breathless and hot. Nose block with white yellow discharge which form crusts.

Treatment

Kali-bich 6 as it is complementary to Calc-carb.
-SL for 7 days.
2nd March 1996-Better
22nd March 1996.

Came with sudden onset of pain and burning in the throat. Difficulty in swallowing started with pain in the ears (left) followed with severe sore throat. Left side enlarged tonsils. Increased perspiration. irritability. Slight cough. Water aggravates nausea also present.

Treatment-Belladonna 1M-VI doses.

24th March 1996
Better except for occasional sneezing-SL for a month.

23rd April 1996
Comes in shyly, blushes and hides behind mother. Complains of sudden blankness while playing outdoors. Increased perspiration. He has been taking all types of foods and drinks. Calcarea-carb 1M-I dose.

24th May 1996.
Had attended a religious function of a major yagna. Was actively in it. Sleeplessness with fear of ghosts after the yagna. Went to Goa with father and had pain in the ears and coughing after swimming and drinking cold. Cough worse after eating and followed by pain in the throat, nausea and vomiting. Belladonna 1M-VI doses for 2 days.

27th May 1996.
Pain in the throat and coughing with vomiting persists. Sneezing worse in the morning. Great restlessness and fever. Dreams of ghosts with fear. Gets up started. Left tonsil tender aggravated swallowing. No nausea. Congestion of the chest with soreness. An important symptom mentioned was that there was coughing with severe pain in the ears which led to the following remedy-Capsicum 200-III doses.

4th June 1996.
Feels much better.tonsils reduced in size. Fear is also reduces and sleeps soundly.

Treatment_SL for 1 month.

Mother who comes for her own treatment for menopausal problems reports that she has become more active, outgoing and also agreed to change to a nearby school. Helps in the household and is more obedient. She has been having everything with no problems from seasonal change.

Calcarea-carb and Capsicum are not mentioned to be related in any of the books except for a fair, fat and flabby constitution. Inspite of Calcarea-carb working as a constitutional the main problem surfaced again and again. So the characteristic symptom of cough with pain in the ears led me to compare Calc-carb and Caps and the following rubrics are covered by both of them.-
