Some Noted Cures Of Rheumatism
NATIONAL JOURNAL OF HOMOEOPATHY 1997 Sep / Oct VOL 5 NO 5.

We, the Homoeopaths, treat the patient and not the disease, and this principle has helped me immensely in treatment of mental and physical maladies. But to keep up with the modern trend of thought, our discussion in all writings, conferences and seminars are being based on names of diseases.
Rheumatism, in its various forms, is a disorder or disease of connective tissues of the body, which become a common factor of a diverse group of diseases and syndromes manifested with pain, stiffness or swelling of muscles and joints.
Worked-out cases would readily leave a permanent impression on the mind of the reader and guide him with the peculiarities of symptoms of each remedy, which can be easily remembered and would reveal the indicating point to find out the correct similimum at a glance.
Thus, I am briefly presenting a number of cases of cures from my own records and other eminent physicians and lay prescribers .

Case 1: Spondylitis
A middle-aged lady Mrs S Dey was under my treatment for her asthma. Her individual characteristic symptom fully tallied with those of Arsenic-alb. One day, she came with a complaint that her neck had become stiff and could not be moved comfortably. She had suffered from a similar complaint a few years back and had to spend a lot on neurologists and physiotherapists and was cured after several months.
I asked her "how many thousands would you give me, if I cure you within a short time?". I gave her a powder of Arsenic-alb 200 in my chamber. Next morning she came and reported that her stiffness had disappeared like magic. I could readily select the remedy as the complaint-stiffness of neck was a symptom of Arsenic-alb and she was the remedy individualized.

Case 2: Rheumatic Pain
A 35 yr old lady, of fair complexion, brown hair and flabby disposition, came with a complaint of rheumatic pain and stiffness in the right knee [when beginning to move and from continued motion]
Symptoms: Flatulent in evening and sensation as of a belt around the hypochondria [after noon] and of a bandage above thigh.
Lycopodium MM a few globules on tongue to be taken for two or three days. Pain disappeared on the fifth day and a trace of the knee trouble remained. Hence, she took Lycopodium MM, a dose. She was fully cured. The indication for selection of remedy was peculiar band like sensation.
Mostly female patients come with a complaint of pain in the heel with a sensation of treading on pebbles leading to difficulty in moving. Such patients are readily cured by Lycopodium.

CASE 3: Rheumatic Cardits
Ms B aged 12 was troubled with inflammatory rheumatism, a year ago which extended to her heart: her hands too, were somewhat deformed. Three weeks earlier she again took a severe cold, which caused her to suffer most intolerable pain in the region of the heart.
When I was called, she had been attended by one of the old school physicians, who had given a grave prognosis- she would not live until next morning. The neighbours were preparing for her burial clothes.

I found her sitting in a rocking chair, having been in that position for a week, as she was unable to lie down for a moment, so great was her dyspnoea. Her pulse was 120/min, temperature 99.50F. She described the location of pain at about the sixth intercostal space, around the apex of the heart. The spot that pained was about the size of a quarter of a dollar, and having three branches, one extending upward across the left [L] chest to the point of [L] shoulder and down the arm and the third downward, across the lower part of sternum or epigastric region. On moving or taking long breaths, the pain became worse, the act of moving always followed by a momentary, suspension of breath. The heart's action was vigorous, striking the chest so hard that it produced a waving undulating motion of the carotids. I thought that there was hypertrophy of the left ventricle, but I could not detect any abnormal sounds but only increased intensity of preserved ????? Spigelia 200 1 dose.
On calling her next morning, I found her lying in bed with two pillow under her head and sleeping soundly. I felt her pulse, and as she did not wake up, I left word that I would call again next day. She improved rapidly thereafter and Spigelia was continued for a month which cured her fully.

Dr C Hering says that Spigelia is an important remedy in pericarditis and other diseases of the heart, because the provings were conducted with greater stress on objective symptoms. The subjective symptoms, by innumerable confirmation, proved to be correct. It is a [L] sided medicine and has a notable symptom of Precordial pain and great aggravation from movement.

CASE 4: Rheumatism
Kalmia is another rheumatic-cum-heart remedy, which gave me an immense success in curing a hopeless case of rheumatoid, declared 'incurable' by the old school physicians. Smt K Dasgupta a soft hearted lady, suffered from sacral pain ever since the delivery of her first child. She was relieved of the trouble after protracted treatment under allopathy.
But, she became a victim of severe shoulder pain from exposure to cold. This pain extended to lumbar region and thence to leg. In another form, the pain shifted to [L] hypochondrium. In a way, her whole body was affected with excruciating pain, and she could neither straighten nor walk. Even sleeping was not comfortable. The old school physicians failed to give even a little relief to her and declared her as a 'hopeless case' As a last resort, she resorted to Homoeopathy.
I took three points for consideration:
One was the cause of the malady, exposure to cold The pain descended from up to down. The original lumbar pain was of nervous origin [fear of labour and delivery] All these points led to the remedy Kalmia, which cured her completely within three to four months.
