Dental Cases and Constitutional Relationship

Editor : Through the following 3 cases the author has demonstrated how dental problems have been managed with constitutional remedies or the relationship of remedies. If is found that the remedy which relieves the patient's dental symptoms often curses the patient's general condition as well. 

CASE 1
Mrs SM 60 yrs, Housewife. Takes homoeopathic treatment off and on for last 32 yrs. Patient was born a blue baby with Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) which was corrected by open heart surgery when she was 20 yrs old. Massive doses of antibiotics were given for a long time. Scar thickened, turning into keloid. Has a big black mole over one eye. 
She has an elder and a younger brother. Due to ASD she would easily turn cyanosed on crying, or slightest excitement; therefore was given extra care and pampered by parents. Even after surgery frequent colds and coughs continued. She would always get up with runny nose and rattling cough. Cold would increase as the day advanced and lessen after 11 am. 
Aggravation from cold food, cold weather, getting wet, slightest change in weather, taking bath at night etc. Would get fatigued easily, with breathlessness and oppression of chest form slightest physical exertion or climbing stairs or walking fast.
Craves sweets³, warm food and drinks, salads and soups.
An Arts graduate, she got married at 27 yrs. Thereafter homeopathic treatment given for colds and weakness. Right from the first day of marriage she did not want to take any responsibility of the house. Haughty, dominating, hysterical, impulsive with violent anger. Could threaten to commit suicide or even threaten to kill her husband in the middle of night and complain of her skin which had only one hypopigmented spot left uncured. Would injure her gums, tear her lips and run down the house just to create an impression that she is harassed by the family. Would like and manipulate maters in such a way that husband takes her side. This would create quarrels in the joint family. Very critical and fault finding. Highly suspicious and jealous. Would run away for whole day if her husband is not well. Will do whatever comes to her mind but would expect others to follow rules and regulations. 

Blames others for her mistakes. During first pregnancy quarreled a lot with her husband, often would run away and stay for one night with friends or at night walk out of the house and her family would go looking for her. Once she hid herself in the next building and watched whether the family was looking for her. (This shows her cruelty). Enjoys putting others in trouble. Quarrelsome. Her nostrils would flare in anger. 

Has two daughters. She lost the second child, a son, an anencephalic monster. She had tried to abort by taking hormone injections which she never told anyone in the family.
Even when her daughters would fall ill, she will remain out of the house, only to return at night shouting and blaming the family for her daughters' illness. Ultimately after 10 yrs of marriage she succeeded in separating from the joint family.
She has tendency to suppuration from injury. Always suffers from fungus infection of nails. Suffered from otorrhoea.
Had developed prolapse of uterus, which was better with Homoeopathic medicines. Also suffered offensive leucorrhoea, which one could smell from afar.
She was given mainly Ars-alb, Hep-sulph, Silicea, Lyc, Naja, Syphillinum, Merc, Sep etc for her physical complaints. 

Her tendency to cold and cough is almost cured. Rarely gets mild attacks. Her physical stamina has gone up like a normal young person, even today can eat any kind of food, takes bath thrice a day. Factors which earlier on increased her troubles have ceased to affect her now.
On 1/3/96 she came with following complaints:
Gums detached from teeth forming pockets. Food particles could not be cleaned easily. As a result recurrent infection, bad breath and ultimately pus pockets formed her lower teeth. Shown to dentist who advised "flap surgery in parts" which could be completed in 2-3 months time; total cost being about Rs 13,000/- but patient decided to take Homoeopathy:
On Working :
- Gums bleeding
- Gums detached form teeth
- Gums bleed on cleaning
- Tongue indented
- Burning in urethra after urination.

4-7-96 Her mouth condition remaining the same she added the following to her teeth and gum complaints.
Developed painless hypopigmented white spot. The size of a peanut, first on right side of tongue and now on left side. Lower jaw on inner side had extra teeth; one on each side; exactly opposite to the white patches on the tongue.
Lumbar pain. Pain disturbs sleep on changing the sides. Therefore sleep unrefreshed. Pain decreases on passing profuse urine.
Knee pain is better if exercises
Warts around neck
Teeth pain aggravated cold food and drinks, and between warm drinks.
Father died of Cancer prostate. Mother dead, has Parkinsons disease.
Strong syphilitic trait and white patches on tongue; raised the doubt of Leukoplakia - a precancerous state. Constant friction on tongue due to projected tooth would cause painful ulcer.
The possibility of precancerous state of tongue was given more importance than gums and teeth.
She was given Lyco 200 1/placebo
19-7-96 Lyco 200 1 every 5th day
Size of white patch reduced.
Extra teeth were extracted.
Teeth slightly sensitive to cold.
6-8-96 Lyco 200 mn.
White patch reduced to pin point
15-10-96
No patch seen.
Her gums improved and flap surgery not required.
Lycopodium was prescribed on:
1. Mental state as given earlier in the case.
2. White patch started fist on right side
3. Teeth are sensitive and pain from cold things. Warmth gives relief
4. Knee pain better moving about.
5. Pain in lumbar region better profuse urination. 

CASE 2
Mr AR, 59 yr was treated in April 1984 for Infective Polyneuritis, consequent to viral infection of uvula. His life saving drug was Phos. All through he was treated with Phos, Nux-vom and intercurrent Tuberculinum. Phos was stepped up from 30 to 10M.
Even whenever any other complaints arose, after being cured he mainly required Phos 10M and Nux-vom 1M.He would complain of tooth pain on and off from sweets and was helped with Phos.

Gum pain aggravation touch.
Indifferent to both cold and warm gargle.

Developed hard boil under left buttock, pain, amelioration cold application, rest and aggravated by touch, pressure.

Diarrhoea from Chinese food [prawns]
Pain in abdomen comes and goes suddenly
Ineffectual urging and straining
Phos 10M and Nux-v 1M did not help
1. Pain comes and goes suddenly
2. Aggravation fish
Ars, Kali group, Lach, Natrum, Puls, Sul, Sep. Kali-carb was chosen [as an cute of Phos] and helped

Bloody expectoration since 2 days
Wakes up at night with cough and spits out blood

Stomatitis, gum bleed Conjunctivitis.
Urging for urine if hand touches anything cold.

Teeth have become loose, pain while chewing. 20-11-91 Phos 10M mn and Nux-vom 1M nt. Given on and off till 28-2-92 Meantime his wife conveyed that he is getting premature ejaculation. As he is not satisfied, he has of late, become irritable.

Dental caries with pyorrhoea. Pain aggravation cold, Foetor oris. Uneasy when sweats.
Ejaculation too quick on penetration [touch]
Dentist: diagnosed his condition as pyorrhoea and advised:
1. Cleaning of gums
2. Long course of antibiotics and 
3. Vitamin C
Being G6PD+ve; antibiotics and Vit C were not advisable.
But patient was allowed gum cleaning for sever pus formation in all the gums.
28-3-92 Silicea 1M
Pain in gums, can bear cold. Foetor oris
16-5-92 Silicea 1M
Gums bleeding, swollen. Foetor oris
30-5-92 Sul 30 BD/Placebo. Calendula Q for gargle.
Gums swollen. Gums bleeding. Gums inflamed. Foetor oris.
Gum pain from cold drinks. Sars, Staph, Sul.
Ejaculation too quick before intromission: Sul
Sul 30 was continued twice daily till July
18-8-92 Sul 30mn/Nux-vom 1M 15 days.
No more ejaculation before intromission
Sex life happy and satisfied. 
Gums sensitive to cold.
Constipated, no stools for 3-4 days, no urge, strains ineffectually.

Pyorrhoea and gums better.
Rt.side tooth pain aggravation from cold; indifferent to warm.

CASE 3
Mrs ANR, 56 yrs, taking regular Homoeopathy since 1981. She came with the complaints of:
1] Stiffness, pain, deformity of finger joints due to Rheumatoid Arthritis.
2] On and off acute attack of skin trouble on face, neck and limbs due to chronic eczema.
3] Hypertension since last 10 yrs
4] Sore throat with hoarseness and loss of voice
Till today has been given varied drugs as and when required for different complaints taking into consideration totality of symptoms in general and in particular. Each new drug was chosen in relation to the previous drug and as and when the picture changed. As a result:
Her pains of Rheumatoid arthritis rarely come up.
Attacks of sore throat and skin trouble are much reduces. Drugs which helped her are; Bell, Merc, Thuja, Sil, Rhus-tox etc.
Her hypertension comes under control always with Sepia.
16-9-95
Lt.molar, carious loose tooth was extracted under local anaesthesia, followed by antibiotics and pain killers.
18-9-95
B P shot up to 190/90 mm Hg after tooth extraction, came under control with Sepia 1M. But there was severe pain on [L] side of face and inside the mouth specially in extracted area. Could not open jaw. Merc-i-r 1M in repetition with Calendula Q gargle were advised.
Merc-i-r was selected on [L] side and pain being indifferent to both warm and cold application.

Feels all teeth are loose, sensation of heaviness in mouth, cheeks get bitten when talking or eating.
Speech thick.
Nit-acid 200 selected on:
Injuries from operations disorder Camph. Carbo-veg
Abuse of medicaments Nit-ac, Nux-vom
Nit-acid is related to Merc which helped her earlier. 
Bitting cheek when talking/eating Nit-acid
Speech thick Nux-vom

Again after a month: not well since tooth extraction 
Sensation of swelling in mouth and tongue.
Cannot open mouth fully. Thick speech.
Swelling of fingers with stiffness.

Again after a month: not well since tooth extraction 
Sensation of swelling in mouth and tongue.
Cannot open mouth fully. Thick speech.
Swelling of fingers with stiffness.

Whole of Buccal mucosa inflamed.
Sensation of swelling in cheeks.
Tongue flabby and [L] edge inflamed with ulcers.
B P under control. But severe pain in finger joints and itching in legs.
Mouth pain not affected by heat and cold.

Camphor.
Staph was selected on Teeth pain after extraction.
[Single drug in Kunzli]
Note: Additions in Murphy's repertory under this rubric are Arn, Calen, Hyper.
Staph 1M BD for about 25 days cleared the whole trouble. There is persistent H/O suppressed anger, vexation, frustration feeling of helplessness right from the day she got married.
Arnica and Hypericum given immediately after tooth extraction, had failed to relieve the trouble.
